The Book of Mormon is a sharp as well as comic stage play written by Robert Lopez, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone. Known for its bold jokes and daring feel, the show portrays a hard look at faith, with a close eye on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). On March 24, 2011, this musical hit the stage on Broadway for the first time, in the O’Neil Theatre. It soon turned into a big hit, winning nine Tony Awards—including top Musical, Book, and Original Score—and a Grammy for top Theater Album.
Plot Overview of The Book of Mormon Musical in London
The tale is about two young LDS missionaries: the confident and strong Kevin Price and his odd, dreamy mate Arnold Cunningham, who tends to lie a lot. They visit a far village in Uganda to share the Mormon faith. But they find life tough there, poor, hungry, sick from HIV/AIDS, and fear of a cruel warlord named ‘the General.’
Price, upset by how the villagers don't care for the LDS word, starts to doubt his faith. Meanwhile, Cunningham, left alone and wanting to help, mixes Mormon ideas with bits from Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and more, making a new, made-up version of the faith. To his surprise, the villagers love this new belief.
Feeling guilty, Price sees a bad dream where he is sent to hell for leaving Cunningham. He realizes he needs to fix things and tries to change the General's mind with a bold act of faith, but he fails. Ashamed, he comes back to the village and sees that truly helping people is more important than strict rules.
The Book of Mormon Theatre - Critical and Commercial Success
The Book of Mormon on Broadway was a smash hit (undoubtedly). In just nine months, it broke the Eugene O’Neill Theatre’s sales record 22 times. The play won nine Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, and three Outer Critics Circle Awards.
It grew bigger beyond Broadway: it opened in Chicago in 2012, followed by a U.S. tour in 2013. On March 21, 2013, it arrived in London's West End at the Prince of Wales Theatre, grabbing four Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best Musical. In 2017, it toured Australia, winning two Helpmann Awards for best Musical.
